Creating Diversity

I recently returned from Los Angeles after a successful screening of the independent Feature film I starred in ‘Luv Don’t Live Here Anymore’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpvT3bNo64I After enjoying the 90 degree weather I returned to the brutal cold of the East Coast.

Later that evening I attended a Panel Discussion. The topic 'Creating Diversity in Commercial Theatre’. Given the amount of melanin in my body, the premise of this blog I felt this would be a wonderful opportunity to hear the thoughts of people in the industry. I had hopes of meeting new people, hearing how different theatre companies and institutions where making inroads for people of color in the industry. Alas I was disappointed being over 18 there are few programs available. Besides having to attend the audition call. Not much as changed to bring opportunities to Artists of color.

This fact lead me to focus on the key word of the discussion “Create”. Its seems more and more that the best solution is to create our own work. Build a network and start the process of getting the product (Film or Play) written, edited and produced. Instead of waiting for someone to hire you focus on your vision. Your vision could be what sets you apart.

Start writing today. The creation process can be daunting at first but nothing good will come from procrastination. Write the vision, make it plain. Your creation is just what the world needs.
